Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the knee joint sound and to obtain baseline data for normal and patient groups. Because this type of analysis has not been done before, developing a new method of analysis was another objective.

Method: Ten normal subjects and 5 patients with meniscal tears were enrolled. Each subject was seated on a chair and active knee flexion and extension were ensued for 60 seconds. Electronic stethoscope and electrogoniometer were applied during the knee motion for data collection. Joint sound data were sampled at 10 kHz and stored in a computer. Time-frequency energy distribution of the knee joint sound was obtained and spectral distribution was calculated.

Results: The spectral analysis revealed 5 peaks in both groups. The patient group showed more variation in joint sound amplitude at approximately 30¡Æof knee flexion.

Conclusion: These results suggest that knee joint sound analysis may be useful in the diagnosis of knee joint pathology.
